Do we listen to the
radio?
It turns out that most of us did, however, we do so in different ways….
What Stations do we
listen to?
- BBC Radio 1
- Kiss
- Capital
- Radio X
- Local Radio (BBC Essex, Heart Essex)
- Classic FM
How do we listen to
the radio?
- Portable Radios
- Smartphones/Tablets
- Laptop/PC
- Car Stereo
- Incidental Background Music (In-Store Radios, Second-Hand music)
it is important to note how the radio
audience changes with the times. For example, a radio show starting at 6:30AM
will attract a different audience demographic at 10:30AM. How is the station or
presenter going to change the show to ensure that the audience change is
recognised?
Which stations do we
know of?
- BBC Radio 1
- Kiss
- Capital
- Radio X
- Local Radio (BBC Essex, Heart Essex)
- Classic FM
- Absolute
- Talk Sport
It’s worth noting that
the radio stations sometimes ‘segment’ the shows, and do features, as well as
just talk, interviews and music. For example, Radio 1 holds ‘Rage Against the
Answering Machine’ and Heart holds ‘Big Town Showdown’
When do we listen to
the radio?
- In the car (on the way to school, short/long journeys)
- During household tasks
Are we concentrated
or incidental listeners?
Some of us concentrate on different parts of a radio
programme, for example, some pay attention to significant discussions, news
programmes, fun game shows, or if their favourite song comes on. Other times,
we become ‘incidental’ listeners of the radio.
Niche Audiences, and
what stations are offered?
There are a wide range of radio stations for almost every
person. For example, one may play lots of classic rock music, when another may
be news and talk focused, and some focus on sport. This is because Internet
Radio and DAB technology have allowed for this.
