ASSESSMENT - DIRT

DIRT

All in all, this assessment when compared to previous ones was a large success. All three paragraphs in the assessment had some very positive skill demonstration, as well as a few areas to look at in future.

PARAGRAPH 1 – FILM (18)

Very good examples taken from the provided case studies, with detailed thoughts and gets straight to the key issues which must be addressed in the question. References to production processes and The Disney Vault added to the quality.

To improve this response, it is worth knowing technical impact to refer to in the answer. For example, how has the access to social media services allowed for a change in the distribution of the movie? Compare them?

PARAGRAPH 2 – R1BS (12)

Knowledge and essay response here was good, with the academic-style response working in your favour. Detail of knowledge was good, and a secure basic understanding of the topic is achieved.

To improve this response, work on the marketing and distribution elements is needed, and this needs to be done in the same detail as production to secure the top marks in the response.

PARAGRAPH 3 – MINECRAFT – (14)

Excellent knowledge on the subject with key facts and dates memorised.

Give more information on pre-MS operations as well as talking about the industry as a whole (what is mainstream?)

Radio 1 Podcast

  • The different responsibilities of presenters and producers
It's a very early start, 5AM. Regular meetings and planning sessions for the show. Going through and suggesting different features. They plan interview questions and games to ensure quality. Producers brief callers/guests to ensure appropriate content and good quality.

  • The preparation that goes into each programme
They know largely what is going on within the next few episodes. They look through social media/news to see what's happened A loose script, but it's flexible. A list of things that need to be spoken about. Constantly thinking for ideas in their daily lives, writing it down and using for the radio show. The music is programmed by a team.

  • That's most challenging and most enjoyable about working on the show
Within in the team, it can be difficult with the changes in producers, but it doesn't change a lot, doing this changes ideas. Trying to get the right 'sound' and preference. Not every show will be as good as another. It's not always brilliant, such as quality of the guests/callers. Meeting the audience requirements is important, they get information.

  • Team dynamics
Getting on with each other, thinking ahead in different ways and making everyone feel comfortable in their space. An 'intimate' family. Team guidance, and producers know where to find gaps. The team teach each other different things. Interpersonal skills are just as important as know-how. This way, it sounds inclusive on the radio. It sounds 'nice'.

  • Ways to get your first break in radio
Knowing about it from an early age, and try to gain experience and volunteer. Exposing yourself about radio. Approaching and asking different producers, and be persistent. Don't be afraid of rejection, someone is interested. It is all about experience, and taking inspiration from other radio presenters.

RADIO - Introduction

Do we listen to the radio?

It turns out that most of us did, however, we do so in different ways….

What Stations do we listen to?

  • BBC Radio 1
  • Kiss
  • Capital
  • Radio X
  • Local Radio (BBC Essex, Heart Essex)
  • Classic FM

How do we listen to the radio?

  • Portable Radios
  • Smartphones/Tablets
  • Laptop/PC
  • Car Stereo
  • Incidental Background Music (In-Store Radios, Second-Hand music)

it is important to note how the radio audience changes with the times. For example, a radio show starting at 6:30AM will attract a different audience demographic at 10:30AM. How is the station or presenter going to change the show to ensure that the audience change is recognised?

Which stations do we know of?

  • BBC Radio 1
  • Kiss
  • Capital
  • Radio X
  • Local Radio (BBC Essex, Heart Essex)
  • Classic FM
  • Absolute
  • Talk Sport

It’s worth noting that the radio stations sometimes ‘segment’ the shows, and do features, as well as just talk, interviews and music. For example, Radio 1 holds ‘Rage Against the Answering Machine’ and Heart holds ‘Big Town Showdown’

When do we listen to the radio?

  • In the car (on the way to school, short/long journeys)
  • During household tasks

Are we concentrated or incidental listeners?

Some of us concentrate on different parts of a radio programme, for example, some pay attention to significant discussions, news programmes, fun game shows, or if their favourite song comes on. Other times, we become ‘incidental’ listeners of the radio.

Niche Audiences, and what stations are offered?

There are a wide range of radio stations for almost every person. For example, one may play lots of classic rock music, when another may be news and talk focused, and some focus on sport. This is because Internet Radio and DAB technology have allowed for this.
