Radio 1 Podcast

  • The different responsibilities of presenters and producers
It's a very early start, 5AM. Regular meetings and planning sessions for the show. Going through and suggesting different features. They plan interview questions and games to ensure quality. Producers brief callers/guests to ensure appropriate content and good quality.

  • The preparation that goes into each programme
They know largely what is going on within the next few episodes. They look through social media/news to see what's happened A loose script, but it's flexible. A list of things that need to be spoken about. Constantly thinking for ideas in their daily lives, writing it down and using for the radio show. The music is programmed by a team.

  • That's most challenging and most enjoyable about working on the show
Within in the team, it can be difficult with the changes in producers, but it doesn't change a lot, doing this changes ideas. Trying to get the right 'sound' and preference. Not every show will be as good as another. It's not always brilliant, such as quality of the guests/callers. Meeting the audience requirements is important, they get information.

  • Team dynamics
Getting on with each other, thinking ahead in different ways and making everyone feel comfortable in their space. An 'intimate' family. Team guidance, and producers know where to find gaps. The team teach each other different things. Interpersonal skills are just as important as know-how. This way, it sounds inclusive on the radio. It sounds 'nice'.

  • Ways to get your first break in radio
Knowing about it from an early age, and try to gain experience and volunteer. Exposing yourself about radio. Approaching and asking different producers, and be persistent. Don't be afraid of rejection, someone is interested. It is all about experience, and taking inspiration from other radio presenters.
